European Taxpayers’ Association rejects aid for Greece

The European Taxpayers’ Association supports the EU Member States in their decision not to grant financial aid to Greece. Greece has already received support from its EU partners – in the spirit of solidarity.

The Greek Government must now demonstrate in concrete terms what it is capable of achieving and quickly show initial success in fiscal consolidation. External financial aid, of whatever kind, would merely be a short-term flash in the pan with no lasting effect and should therefore be rejected. It would not resolve the country’s structural problems. Greece must tackle these problems itself, without placing a financial burden on European taxpayers. The EU Member States are therefore urged to continue to act prudently and to exert the necessary pressure on the Greek government to ensure that it pursues and maintains a sound course in financial and budgetary policy. This is the only way for Greece to strengthen its credibility. This would also be recognised by the financial markets.
