Commentary on the TAE press release of 18 May 2011, ‘TAE calls for inspections of motorway construction in Bulgaria’

In view of the considerable media interest in our press release regarding the use of EU funds in Bulgaria, we would like to add the following to our statement above:

It was never, and remains not, the intention of the European Taxpayers’ Association (TAE)’s press release to question the policies of the Bulgarian Government.

We believe that the Bulgarian Government is on the right track in the fight against corruption and the misuse of public funds. This was the main reason why the Bulgarian Prime Minister, Dr Boyko Borisov, was awarded the European Taxpayers’ Prize in 2009.

We support the fight against corruption and the misuse of funds, and we particularly encourage Bulgaria to pursue this important goal consistently.

It was important to us to express our concerns regarding the motorway construction in Bulgaria – which is financed by EU funds – in order to demonstrate our solidarity with Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian Government informed us that, in its view, this information was unfounded, but gave assurances that it would continue to monitor the matter and ensure the greatest possible transparency for the European Taxpayers’ Association.
