TAE’s statement on the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive

The Taxpayers Association of Europe has been closely following the debate on the revision of the Tobacco Products Directive 2001/37/EC for some time. Recent media reports have now provided a more detailed account of the proposal drawn up by the Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Consumers. The proposed regulation appears to aim at the complete standardisation of tobacco packaging and products, including their appearance and design. As an organisation representing the interests of 30 different taxpayers’ associations, we are deeply concerned by this development.

We have therefore called on all EU finance ministers and the relevant EU Commissioners to take action.
